150 years Bavarian Museum of Applied Arts
28 November 2019 – 27 September 2020
The first Great Exhibition was held in 1851. Among other things, it showcased the latest products from the fields of art, craft and technology. Visitors were captivated: for the first time, and practically under one roof, it was possible to see what was considered modern and progressive in foreign countries.
The consequences were the foundation of numerous museums of applied arts, which made the international craft and design products famous in their home towns. In Nuremberg, the Bavarian Museum of Applied Arts was founded in 1869. It closed its doors for the final time in 1987, and the collection was transferred to the GNM. The special exhibition will show the history and function of this institution using selected objects, some of which will be on show for the first time.
