20th century
The impressively reorganized 20th century collection, housed in recently renovated rooms, is lavish and bright. The exhibition ranges from masterpieces of painting, expressive sculptures and three-dimensional objects to photographs and well-known classics of design history, giving a comprehensive picture of the history of art and style of the past 100 years.
Artists who, despite the label of "degenerate art", did not bow to the National Socialist dictate are also represented, for example Gerhard Marcks, Ernst Wilhelm Nay or Fritz Winter. In the 1960s, a young generation of artists in both East and West rebelled against the worldview of post-war society. This is exemplified through works by Joseph Beuys and Wolf Vostell or the photographs of Ute Klophaus, which capture numerous art happenings. Like the Dadaists, the Fluxus artists saw art as a communicator of social questions and were pioneers for many of the artistic ideas that followed.
