Reinventorisation of the holdings of Lovis Corinth, Gabriel von Max and Richard Riemerschmid

Project duration: 2010 – 2013
Project sponsorship: Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung (Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation), Munich

The Deutsches Kunstarchiv in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum is improving the access to the much used written documents of Lovis Corinth (1858-1925), Gabriel von Max (1840-1915) and Richard Riemerschmid (1868-1957) through digital inventorisation. The holdings will be classified, inventoried and made accessible according to today’s standards. The project will provide information in a systematic manner, which is authoritative for further scholarly work. The results will be published in the internet.

Information on the Holdings

Until now, all three holdingswererecorded – if at all – in typewritten inventory volumes. These volumes are outdated with regard to (1) the “Regeln zur Erschließung von Nachlässen und Autographen“ (RNA; “Rules for the Cataloguing of Literary Archives and Autographs“) recommended by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, and (2) all technical aspects since there are well searchable databases available that allow differentiated searches and the exchange of data with other archive portals.

Project Progression

From November 2010 to August 2011 the holdings of Lovis Corinth were newly documented. In order to unite the three existing inventories and to bring them into a meaningful order analogous to the classifications of the Deutsches Kunstarchiv, it was necessary to match them. This was the only way to create a complete, user friendly inventory. A restorer from the “Institut für Kunsttechnik und Konservierung“ (IKK; Institute for Art Technology and Conservation) accompanied the cataloguing. After the classification and the input into the Archive’s own database were completed, each folder received a unique shelf mark. The inventory was checked, the records sorted by reference number and placed into archive-suitable envelopes and boxes. Since September 2011 the Gabriel von Max holding is being inspected and newly recorded.
